Buddies

Wife’s perspective; today we said goodbye to our hitch hikers and said hello to Steinbach where we spent our downtime. It’s been 4 days of running; physically and mentally pushing the body. Tomorrow morning is going to be a much needed time of rest (yes this is technically being written in the Wednesday but I haven’t slept so I’m still saying tomorrow).
Today again has had special guests joining in on the adventure. BIL Greg came for part of the morning run and then there have been people driving behind us honking (good honking) and even more bikers for this evenings run and a wife & daughters of a biker who also joined in on the cheering at different mile markers.
This afternoon a trusted friend and runner came by to chat with Shannon and listen to what needed to be said out loud; the nerves are back. I do feel honesty is occurring and talking about the fears out loud helps dispel their power. This morning I was told his stomach hurt; NO, that is the same verbatim that occurred last year as apart of the downward spiral. But I am glad to say he did eat chicken noodle soup before the evening run and a Big Mac after. Some how all liquids are loosing their appeal but apple juice, pop and cold bottled water have had their winning moments.

The evening run. Going in he was tired. Exhausted but his spirits were buoyed when he learnt two running buddies were going to bike the 10miles with him. My heart was so grateful for their kindness tonight. Friends run when you run and walk when you walk. That is exactly what happened this evening. As I bunny hopped ahead with the RV and biked back to meet them after I parked at 5 miles and 10miles I never knew if I’d come upon a runner who was done, who was running or who was walking and still making every step count towards the goal. No matter what was going on the guys were chatting with Shannon, encouraging him and telling him in their own ways they were proud of him no matter the pace. I even heard stories being shared by all 3 and giggles. My heart was filled with gratitude. They also encouraged Shannon to take some extra time to let his body rest. So. Not out of fear are we going to have a quiet, runless morning but because it’s wise.
Even before this journey started there had been chatter maybe we’d take a day off to just rest; the Hope was fun mountain would be an option this summer but alas it’s closed.

So tonight the end was a bit west of the Johnson fruit shed in Ritcher.

And, I missed the bear because I was driving Fleetwood to the 10mile end point. Glad the guys got to share in that experience.

Oakridge had a plant sale. When your friend knows you’ve wanted a fig and realizes you are in town. A pit stop was made.
